Rose       A rose is a woody perennial of the genus Rosa, within the family Rosaceae. The roses are armed with sharp prickles. There are around 100 species of roses along the world, such as in Europe, America, Africa and most in Asia. Roses are also famous for their beautiful color and fragrance which are various. They are white, yellow, orange, pink and red which all are based on the species and region.       Besides its beauty, the rose is also used as commercial perfume, and cut flowers crops. Even, the rose can also be used as medicine.       Rose perfumes are made from attar of roses or rose oil. It is transparent pale yellow-grey in color. To extract one gram of rose oil, it’s needed about two thousand flowers.       Roses as cut flowers crops are used to express someone’s feeling. Red roses may express love, yellow for friendship and white for grieving.       Rose fruit or known as rose hip can also be used as medicine in Chinese. It is used for stomach problems. For now, it is being investigated for controlling cancer growth.

Assessment has been an important part, or even always required, in the relation with any teaching and learning activities, so in language ones. Here I will not much expose about language assessment, thus, further principles or explanation about assessment and other related terms can be discovered on 'Language Assessment: Principles and Classroom Practices' by H Douglas Brown or 'Language Testing and Assessment' by Glenn Fulcher and Fred Davidson. Probably next time I can explore more about language assessment principles.

In this occasion, I'm going to share some samples of language test (assessment instrument), especially those which cover teaching and learning in senior high school level.

The following test is designed based on the topic of narrative text, and exposure of simple past tense.
Here it is.

Kita juga bisa bermain dengan orang lain dengan memilih mode 'LAN' untuk bermain dengan teman dan menghubungkan PC dengan kabel LAN, atau bermain secara online dengan pemain lain di seluruh dunia dengan memilih mode 'Multiplayer'.

Narrative vs. Recount Text

I once asked my students, "What is the difference between narrative text and recount text?" The answer they gave implied that recount is from personal experience, while narrative is a fiction. Then, I conclude that such answer of theirs must be based on their learning experience where in studying language, especially about narrative writing, they are often exposed with some narrative titles like Malin Kundang, Cinderella, Snow White, and so on which tend to be fiction; or titles like My Vacation, or My Holiday when on recount text. However, the conclusion they made is rather missed.

That both are story and telling the past event are true, but what make them differ is not on the basis of the truth of the event. For example, if a detective has a true story or real experience in solving a case and then the story is developed into a writing, then, it can be a narrative story although it comes from a personal experience.

The basic principle related to genres of narrative writing (whether it is narrative, recount, spoof, or anecdote) is all about style, parts of writing, and plot, not be based on the truth of event.

Flat and Pointed Surfaces

'Flat' and 'pointed' surfaces are used to illustrate the plot of story between recount and narrative text. Recount is a flat story which tells series of events and closed with summarizing. Narrative text also contains of some series of events, but each series has its degree which can be increasing or calming down. What I mean by 'degrees' in narrative text is mentioned as some parts in the text (orientation, complication, resolution, and code). If such parts are then described in a curve, then orientation is illustrated by a flat line, compilation by ascending line, resolution by descending line, and coda by flat line. Recount text, however, does not have such kind of curve. It may contain with, for example, "On Sunday, I went hiking with my friends", "We went by a 4x4 vehicle", "Then, we did this, we did that", and so on.  It is just flat.

Writing Styles

It is about the intelligence of writer which can compose a text into narrative or recount. A detective story which  should be alarming can be flat and may tend to be recount text if it is delivered in a flat way. On the other hand, a personal experience can be a great narrative text if it is arranged and touched with languages which can lead or drive readers' emotion.

Descriptive Text vs. Report Text

'Descriptive' and 'report' text, what makes them differ? So let's think first. If, for example, I give you two texts titled,  'John, My Furred Friends' and 'Cats', which one do you think is report a report text?

Well, then I tell you that the answer of 'which one the report text is' is that entitled 'Cats'. So can you give explanation related to question by exploring the distinction of both texts? Then, here is my explanation.

Same Characteristics

Such topic, the difference between descriptive and report text, can be pretty interesting since both text types are relatively possessing the same characteristics. The most visible feature is that both text types contain some description, which means they describe about something, whether in particular or general. This kind of identical feature might have been the reason of why some students may, sometimes or at the first time, make wrong text composition in which they are asked to make report text but, then, they compose a descriptive one.

Particular and General

Those two terms, 'particular' and 'general' are the key point in explaining the difference between these two text types. Shortly, descriptive text describes something in particular, while report one describes in general. That is why if we take a look back at the two text titles given above it is distinct that 'Cats' is a title of report text for the title represents that the text cover general explanation and analysis about cats (what is cats, how cats behave, the types of cats, the history, and so on). On the other hand, descriptive text does not go far on explaining cats in universe, it talks about a specific cat; for example my cat, your cat, Mr. Jack's cat, my grandfather's cat, ore other's cat. Other illustration of descriptive text is when it talks about the roses in your garden, your goat, your house, or your sister's baby.

The Language Feature

It is true to say both text types make lots of use of simple present tense, however if we take a look and analyze thoroughly at the language use and form, we can find that report text uses a language which tends to be more formal than descriptive does. This can be led by the fact that report text is based on the systematic analysis or observation which is in its nature is 'rather scientific'.

Mini Robot Wars - Download

Anda tentu pernah bermain game ‘Plant vs. Zombie’, game PC peraih penghargaan Game of The Year pada tahun 2011. Beberapa, bisa jadi termasuk anda, mungkin sudah sangat menantikan release edisi berikutnya dari game ini.

Eit, namun article saya kali ini bukan tentang seri terbaru dari ‘Plant vs. Zombie’, melainkan tentang game yang secara gameplay serupa, atau bahkan lebih lengkap, dan game ini bernama ‘Mini Robot Wars’.

Mini Robot Wars

Kalau ‘Plant vs. Zombie’ bercerita tentang tumbuhan-tumbuhan yang berperang melawan zombie, game ini bercerita tentang kumpulan robot-robot kerdil yang berusaha mempertahankan planetnya dari serbuan invader robot galaxy lain.

Secara gameplay, game ini saya katakan mirip dengan ‘Plant vs. Zombie’ karena secara bertahap seiring meningkatnya level, anda akan mendapatkan berbagai macam robot dengan kemampuan serta keistimewaan yang beragam yang dapat membantu secara lebih efektif untuk berperang melawan berbagi macam musuh yang juga akan semakin beragam. Kalau di PvZ kita harus mengumpulkan 'matahari' untuk bisa menanam, maka di game ini kita harus mengumpulkan green diamond untuk bisa menghadirkan robot di medan perang.

Selain itu robot-robot itu juga dapat diupgrade dengan cara mengumpulkan sparepart yang berceceran saat perang untuk kemudian digunakan membiayai upgrade guna meningkatkan kualitas serangan ataupun memperkuat defense. Dalam game ini terdapat 150 stages, yang dibagi dalam 3 episode dan dipoles dengan storyline yang menarik serta bermacam varian medan perang (tanah berumput, padang pasir, bawah laut, daratan es, atau medan berduri). Selain itu juga terdapat menu ‘Achievement’ yang akan menampilkan record yang berhasil kita capai, ya mirip-mirip dengan penghargaan militer begitu lah.

Dengan ukuran hanya 120 MB, game ini tidak berat untuk dijalankan di PC dengan spesifikasi yang pas-pasan. Yang jelas, game ini tidak kalah dengan Plant vs. Zombie, hanya desainnya saja yang menurut saya sedikit kaku. Tapi secara keseluruhan, sangat pantas dan harus dicoba.

a.       Gaming Failure

Di awal bisa jadi kita sangat bersemangat untuk bermain game, namun coba bayangkan, setelah 1 jam bermain kita terus-terusan mengalami kekalahan, atau tidak mempu menyelesaikan satu stage tertentu. Bisa-bisa kita jadi bad-mood karena hal ini. Yah, itu yang saya sebut gaming failure. Untuk permasalahan ini saya tidak bisa membantu karena anda sendiri lah yang harus meningkatkan kualitas permainan game anda.

b.      Console Failure

Dengan spesifikasi PC yang pas-pasan, bila anda memakasakan untuk bermain game Call of Duty, atau mungkin PES 2013, maka saya prediksi anda akan menjadi frustasi karena permasalahan console failure. Console failure sendiri tidak hanya terjadi saat anda menjalankan game-game besar. Game kecil pun juga bisa mengakibatkan console failure, bila secara spesifikasi PC anda lebih memprihatinkan, semisal PC anda mengandalkan prosesor Intel Atom, atau Celleron. Atau bisa juga dikarenakan kondisi internal console yang sedang ‘sakit’, semisal hardisk penuh, terlalu banyak program terinstal, terlalu banyak background program yang memakan ruang RAM, dan sebagainya, yang itu semua bisa menghambat kinerja game yang seharusnya biasa/ringan, menjadi berat. Untuk permasalahan console failure ini (baik karena spesifikasi PC yang kurang tangguh, atau hanya sekedar ingin meningkatkan performa game-nya), maka saya merekomendasikan untuk memboosting PC dengan program Game Booster, yang disini saya akan share versi 3.1 nya.

Closing

2.       External Distractor

Faktor pengganggu yang satu ini terlepas dari kaitannya langsung dengan game. Gambaran distraction nya adalah semisal, saat kita sedang asyik main game, tiba-tiba diteriaki emak, disuruh beli sabun, atau beli bumbu-bumbu. Udah sekarang harga bumbu-bumbu pada naik lagi.

Haha, jangan serius-serius bacanya.
